Investing in Gold

Investment Gold Coins, Ingots and Bars

Investing in gold has never been more accessible. Whether you are looking for collectible coins or investment-grade bars and ingots, there is no shortage of options available today. Gold can be purchased online through large marketplaces, specialist bullion dealers, and even via television advertising promoting commemorative issues from locations ranging from Vanuatu to the Isle of Man.

If you have arrived at this page, you may be considering gold as a long-term investment, a short-term store of value, or a way to diversify your assets in a world shaped by global uncertainty, economic volatility, and geopolitical tension. Alternatively, you may be an established coin collector wishing to add gold to your collection. Whatever your reason, our aim is to provide clear, practical information to help you make informed decisions.

Gold Bars/Ingots and Rounds.

The smallest official gold bar available is a 1g ingot. When new, these are usually supplied sealed within a credit-card-style holder that also serves as a certificate of authenticity, displaying a serial number that should correspond with the ingot itself. Older or pre-owned ingots are often no longer accompanied by their original certificates but should still be clearly stamped with a serial number and the manufacturer’s mark, such as “Suisse” or “Metalor”. When purchasing larger bars, we strongly recommend obtaining the original certificate wherever possible.

Bullion metals are generally supplied in three main forms: rounds, bars/ingots, and bullion coins. Rounds are struck in a similar way to coins and are typically produced in sizes ranging from ¼oz up to around 5oz, with the 1oz round being the most common.

Bars and ingots are either pressed or cast. Pressed bars are quicker and easier to manufacture and are commonly produced in sizes up to 100oz. Cast (or poured) bars are available from around 50g (1.75oz) and are preferred for larger weights, including the iconic 400oz bars stored in bank vaults and made famous by cinema. At a gold price of approximately £3,220 per troy ounce, a 400oz bar has a value in the region of £1.29 million.

Gold Bullion Coins

Although we primarily deal in gold coins, we can also source a wide range of precious metals, including gold, silver and platinum. Our Gold Bullion Bars and Ingots information page outlines the various product types available.
Gold bullion coins remain a popular choice among physical gold investors. Common examples include British Sovereigns, South African Krugerrands, American Eagles, as well as more unusual issues such as the Australian Nugget and Chinese Panda. Some bullion coins have become highly collectable over time and may command substantial premiums above their intrinsic gold value, particularly coins such as the Panda. Please see our extensive World Bullion Coins section for further details.

As with all bullion purchases, prices are based on the daily gold fix, set twice each weekday by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) at 10:30 and 15:00 GMT. Due to the inherent volatility of gold prices, we do not offer fixed pricing on bullion coins. Instead, we aim to provide the most competitive price available, based on market conditions, availability, and the quantity required at the time of purchase.
