1879 Queen Victoria Young Head Gold Sovereign (London) Key Date R4

The 1879 London struck St George reverse sovereign is a key date within the series, and rated as R4 by Marsh with just 20,013 struck. All 1879 St George & Dragon reverse sovereigns struck at the Tower Mint in London were produced on a single day in December of that year. Very few examples survive and this example can be considered slightly above the grade normally seen when these appear, Near Very Fine Obverse, Reverse Very Fine or better, possibly once lightly cleaned, and Extremely Rare.


Obverse : The Queen’s head to left. Hair bound with a double fillet and collected up into a knot behind. Initials W.W. in truncation. No Mint Letter denoting London mint under truncation,

Reverse :St.George mounted with sword attacking the dragon. The date appears below the exergue line at the bottom with the letters B.P. to the right. Horse with varying length tail.
