A sought-after set of four Gold Two Pound (£2) coins, issued by The Royal Mint to commemorate the XVII Commonwealth Games, held in Manchester, England in 2002.
This historic event marked the first Commonwealth Games of the new millennium, celebrated during Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee year. As Head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty officially opened the Games, welcoming 73 national teams competing across 17 sports.
Each coin in the set features the same reverse design by Matthew Bonaccorsi, with a central motif symbolizing athletes holding hands in unity around a globe, encircled by a distinctive coloured flag representing one of the four constituent nations of the United Kingdom:
