Information for customers importing qualifying UK gold coins into the European Union. Following the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union, there has occasionally been confusion regarding the VAT treatment of British gold collector coins entering EU member states. This page provides details of the European Union's special VAT scheme for investment gold and the UK gold coin denominations included on the official exemption list for 2026. This information may be shown to your local customs authority where clarification of the VAT status of an eligible gold coin is required. The European Union publishes an annual list of gold coins which are considered to meet the criteria for investment gold under Article 344(1)(2) of Council Directive 2006/112/EC. Coins included on the list are treated as investment gold and their supply is exempt from VAT under the special investment-gold scheme, subject to the applicable conditions. This includes many UK Royal Mint gold coins produced in Proof, Brilliant Uncirculated and bullion formats where the relevant coin denomination is covered by the scheme. Official reference: The following United Kingdom denominations appear on the European Union's 2026 investment-gold list: Gold Sovereigns Royal Mint Proof Gold Brilliant Uncirculated Gold Silver coins are treated differently from investment gold. UK Royal Mint silver Proof, Brilliant Uncirculated and bullion coins do not benefit from the special EU investment-gold VAT exemption simply because they carry a UK face value. Import VAT and any other applicable charges are determined under the rules of the destination country. Rates and customs treatment can therefore vary between EU member states. Modern UK silver coins which remain legal tender should not be described under commodity code 71181000 as that tariff heading is for non-gold coins not being legal tender. The appropriate customs classification should be confirmed for the particular shipment where necessary. Important: This page is provided as general customs and VAT information. Customs authorities in the destination country are responsible for the final classification and tax treatment of imported goods. Rules and official lists may change, and customers should check locally where required.
