2017 Queen Elizabeth II Gold BU 5 Sovereign Piece + Boxed / COA

(Royal mint description)
The Five-Sovereign Piece is the largest coin in The Sovereign family, the only coin in The Sovereign range struck to Brilliant Uncirculated standard, and is only issued as an individual coin – it is not available in any set. As 2017 is the 200th anniversary of the ‘modern’ Sovereign, The Five-Sovereign Piece also features a special design, for just one year.

The Sovereign was first struck more than 500 years ago, but in 1817 the coin was reborn as the embodiment of the newly introduced Gold Standard. Those first coins featured Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon design, so highly regarded that it still appears on The Sovereign, 200 years on. This year, we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the ‘modern’ Sovereign with a celebratory design.

In 2017, The Five-Sovereign Piece features Pistrucci’s original masterpiece, struck with tools carefully remastered from the famous engraver’s originals. In this celebratory issue, the famous portrait of St George is surrounded by a full garter border and inscription, as Pistrucci originally intended. Just 1,000 Limited Edition Presentations are available, with each coin finished to Brilliant Uncirculated standard and presented in a Royal Mint case.
