The Tower of London – The Ceremony of the Keys 2019 Gold Proof £5 Coin + Boxed / COA

An Enduring Ritual – the Legacy of Edward III

It could be said that history is often made by small actions and this is certainly true of the centuries-old ritual that takes place each evening at the Tower of London. The Ceremony of the Keys began when Edward III arrived one night at the Tower to find it completely unguarded, and ever since then the tradition of locking the gates during the night has remained little changed through generations of British monarchs.

In the final coin of our Tower of London Collection, the essential items of the ritual – a lantern and The Queen’s Keys – are depicted in the centre of the coin. Struck in 22 carat gold and finished to Proof standard, this beautiful coin also features a special Tower of London mint mark, while the edge bears the inscription ‘on into twilight within walls of stone’. This highly collectable coin is available in an extremely Limited Edition Presentation of 325 and is presented in an official Royal Mint case, with a booklet uncovering the fascinating traditions of the iconic fortress.
